In virology, viruses can be broadly categorized as infectious or non-infectious and as replication competent or replication defective.

  • Infectious: An infectious virus is capable of entering and infecting host cells, thereby initiating its life cycle.
  • Replication Defective: A replication-defective virus refers to a virus that is unable to complete its replication cycle or reproduce itself effectively within host cells. This defect may arise due to mutations or deletions in specific viral genes or genome regions critical for replication.

Therefore, when a virus is described as "infectious replication defective," it means that it can still infect host cells, enter them, and possibly perform some limited replication, but it is unable to complete the replication cycle successfully or produce a high number of viral progeny.
